i just learned that one of the most popular Christmas songs is actually a song about California. White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin, yet another East Coast transplant who found a new home in California. in the song, he yearns for a Christmas past, ‘like the ones [he] used to know.’ the most common version of this song omits the first verse, which is what sets the stage for the rest of the tune. it opens as such:
The sun is shining, the grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway
There’s never been such a day
In Beverly Hills, L.A.
But it’s December the 24th
And I’m longing to be up North…
and here you can enjoy the full song, sung by favorite Bing Crosby:
as much as i will enjoy my California Christmas in the sun, lounging on a beach and surfing (or attempting to – where’s the thick wetsuit??), i too miss waking up to a white Christmas and sitting by the fire. this year, yet again, my parents sent pictures of their home with a light dusting. well, they did a couple weeks ago. sometimes the snow doesn’t line up that perfectly with December 25th. sigh! its still a lovely memory, and today i’m making new ones.
Merry Christmas! <3
