i actually planned my trip specifically to see Ai Weiwei’s exhibit. i’m a big fan of his work, so this was a wonderful opportunity for me to see both his art and the Rock for the first time in person. i spent quite a bit of time doing the regular audio tour, seeing the main cell block and hearing about its history. i then went on to see the special exhibit by Mr Weiwei.
it started with sounds – recordings of songs, speeches, and other readings that speak to the lack of freedoms many people still experience right now in the world. if anything it was eerie enough just to hear sounds in that drafty old building, let alone the sad stories they told.
and then something beautiful in an otherwise hostile environment..
